When Affi met Efi: A Love Story

In honor and respect to my parents, I’m encouraged to share more about their journey to love. Their love, determination, and resiliency inspired me to create EFIKOKO and clearly, I wouldn’t exist if they never shared these intimate moments. If you’re interested in a detailed story of their love journey, my dad, Efiong, wrote an entire book about it called When Affi me Efi. It is full of the love letters they wrote to each other while courting. I recall reading my first copy while in college and admiring the respect, focus, and deep love for Jesus Christ they shared. Binding them together, like a rocket destined to explore the outer-bounds.

Black love stories deserve more attention from Black people. Folks are so caught up in the superficial whitewashed love stories that aren’t for us. My father proposed to my mother in a letter. A letter. There wasn’t any fancy glitz or glam. The humility and directness is so dope and refreshing.

“Write soon and write frankly.” OK! Set the bar high, always! I think this is the motto my mom lives by. She doesn’t have time to play around or guess what you mean. In the few pages shared you can get a vibe of the passion and energy that created me and EFIKOKO!
